1. Provide more traction
It's possible that the lid is wet, or that it's just really slick and slippery, and that's why you're having trouble holding on to it.
Use the point of a butter knife, a bottle opener, or a flat-head screwdriver to delicately push open the door.
Water hammer works by increasing pressure in the area around the lid, which in turn causes the seal to fail.
